AMV CONTEST RULES AND GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION

You may only submit an AMV of your own creation.

You may only submit an AMV that has not won first or second place in any category of any other AMV contest at the time of submission to SugoiCon. You may submit videos that have been submitted to other conventions and/or shown during general screenings.

We will be accepting up to three AMV submissions per individual or collective group of editors. AMV submissions may not be slightly different versions from one another using the same song. Only two videos submitted by an individual or collective group of editors will be shown during the AMV Contest.

There is no set time limit for length of any video.

All AMV submissions will be pre-screened for content and audio/video quality. Follow a general PG-13 content guideline for audio/video content. Videos deemed inappropriate will be disqualified and will not be shown at SugoiCon at any time. Disqualifying content is not limited to, but includes, excessive violence, excessive sexual content, and strong language.

Footage used must be primarily from an anime or video game source. You may use multiple video sources.

Audio should be primarily music, without excessive dialog or narration. You may use multiple audio sources. Some spoken parts are acceptable given the context of your video (i.e. if you are making a parody or trailer-style AMV).

No subtitles from fansubs or commercial releases. Subtitles that you add yourself are okay.

Try to avoid using video sources with timestamps, network logos, karaoke text, or other visual distractions.

If selected, your video will be shown on the big screen via an LCD projector. Try to use the highest-quality video sources you can, and keep in mind that some videos will look different when projected.

Submissions must be in by November 14. (Note to those submitting: Specific times and dates for AMV events will be announced at a later date. Special seating arrangements will be made for attending editors, also to be determined at a later date.)

Categories: Submitted AMVs will be rated and categorized into genres during a closed screening by preselected judges. The highest rated videos for each genre will be shown during the SugoiCon AMV Contest. We will try to have the following five genres in the contest, but we may have to re-organize them if we do not receive sufficient submissions:

  • Romantic / Sentimental (Cheerful or sad. Subject matter is about love.)
  • Dramatic / Serious (Subject matter is not primarily romantic, cheerful, and / or action.)
  • Action / Adventure (Subject matter is action and / or story based.)
  • Upbeat / Dance (Subject matter is peppy, vibrant, and rhythmic.)
  • Comedy / Parody (Subject matter is primarily intentionally comedic.)

  • We are not currently accepting AMV Hell, non-comedic trailers, or non-full song fan parodies for the purpose of competing in the AMV Contest. Any such submission may be shown during the AMV General Screening. All Trailer Parodies will be considered Comedy / Parody, regardless of any other factors.

  • Non-Competing Music Videos:

Videos disqualified from the AMV Contest for content reasons will also not be shown during the General Screening.
